While reading these two short stories, I was a little confused at first. Reading the first story, I began to see parallels between the negative aspects of techonolgy and the futuristic home. When the parents locked the magical room, I thought of parents taking a phone away. When the child relied on things like a machine that ties shoes, it reminded me of the new technologies that complete simple jobs for us. When I looked back at the links provided to class, I saw that there was an “about the book” section, and that I was pretty close to the point of the story. Of course, technology has created so many opportunities and positive aspects in our world, but I always wonder if the overwhelming presence of this technology is going to negatively affect the younger generations. The reliance that younger groups have on technology is completely absurd. A trip to the mountains with no service used to be the vacation of a lifetime for a young kid, being able to fish, boat, and explore. Today, the words “no signal” are almost equivalent to the world ending for a child. I am by no means saying that people my age aren’t reliant on things like our phones, but I believe it is just getting worse and worse. The decline of self cofidence and attention span, and the increase in negative exposure has been cynical to the younger generations. How can we help younger generations to not be so attached?
The second story seems to follow along the same lines. Technology is inevitably replacing us. Although the family itself is gone, life still goes on. The technology is so advanced that life can go on without actual human presence. As time goes on, technology can only get smarter. With the continuance of technological advancament, the extinction of human need is unavoidable. Today we believe that Tesla’s self-driving car is groundbreaking, but soon enough we will watch as technology makes our breakfast, does our work, maybe even transport us from one place to another, and in the end replaces us. We will no longer be needed in this world. Technology does not only affect the younger generations though. Older generations are still consumed by their phone, going through facebook, texting friends and family, watching youtube, etc. The whole world is dependant on what techonolgy has given us. I always wonder if that scares anyone. Feeling like you are needed in this world is something many strive for, yet we are creating something that no longer makes us a necessity in this world.
